Just got this in my inbox seconds ago. Dan Black is a multi-instrumental artist and producer…by the sound of it he’s pretty effin dope!
Thanks to his father’s coveted record collection–the guy shares his son’s love of Dylan, the Beatles and Portishead–and a lot of underage clubbing in London, Black’s wanted to make some form of music since he first picked up a guitar to impress a girl. Never mind the fact that it had two strings, leading to some literal two-track recordings. That’s another thing that makes Black stand out: his refusal to rely on outside producers, and his willingness to work with limited means.
J Dilla had production credits over some of my favorite hip hop acts like Common, A Tribe Called Quest, De La, etc. Here’s some of that Dilla ish I love as well as an excerpt of his legacy from Music’s Over blog.
Frequently and rightly placed in the same context as DJ Premier, Pete Rock, and Kanye West, Jay Dee built and sustained a high standing as a producer’s producer while maintaining a low profile. When Pharrell Williams appeared on BET’s 106 & Park in 2004, he excitedly declared that Jay Dee was his favorite producer and told an audibly stumped crowd that it had probably never heard of the man. At the time, Jay Dee had been active for well over a decade and had netted enough beats — including the Pharcyde’s “Runnin’,” De La Soul’s “Stakes Is High,” Common’s “The Light,” and several others with production teams the Ummah and the Soulquarians — to be considered an all-time great. Alternately known as J Dilla, or just Dilla, he never produced a mainstream smash and, in many cases, his presence has to be confirmed with a liner notes scan. (And even then, that might not help; he occasionally went uncredited).
I’m definitely looking forward to New Amerykah pt. II: Return of the Ankh. Simply put Erykah Badu is one of my favorites of all times! The Album will be available soon…March 30, 2010 to be precise.
Until then enjoy this little number which just leaked off her March 30th release. Can I just say it’s dope! Erykah gets a little help on there from ?uestlove and James Poyser too.
Crooks and Castle does it soooooo right. I’m sweating this collection right now…all indications suggest Spring 2010 should be a fantastic year for women’s apparel. And, while my mind is focused on spotting the latest from Winter Fashion week, this right here, right here! this Right Here is a welcomed diversion. From top to bottom I love it all!! My favorites being look 12 and 13. But these leggings, these leggings, THESE FLIPPIN PRINTED PAISLEY LEGGINGS is tight! More pictures after the jump off… Get the whole story »
My tribute to J Dilla continues with an interview of Common that’s been floating around in wider circulation recently. Below three more tracks for you listening pleasure…
It’s that time of year where hip hop head pay tribute to a man whose life ended abruptly and before the mainstream accepted his greatness. J Dilla’s legacy lives on in his music and the people whose lives he touched. Not trying to be sentimental; just trying to point out the impact he had on hip hop music. He’s been called your favorite producer’s favorite producer. Enjoy these three tracks produced by the late great Jay Dee. I’ll be posting more in the coming days and weeks.
