I have a Gawdamn right to be picky, nosy, and angry at my favorite artists who water down their edginess by assimilating in mainstream consumer culture. I know there are those of you out there who fully agree, and those who think I’m crazy. Let me put it to you this way: for me growing up listening to Resurrection by Common Sense was a learning experience…about me, about the unity I felt when hearing about the struggle to survive from an African American perspective, about how Hip Hop is a means for mental and spiritual advancement.
In short that’s why I gasp for air when I see Uncle Questo in an Xbox commercial, or Mos Def for GMC, and Common for Coke and Gap…suffice it to say those corporations have done their fair share to halting the dreams and concerns of my favorite artist from being achieved, so why the F#@& do they end up partnering?
I couldn’t say, and even though I’m not a fan of UMC I am a big fan of seeing Common take his career to new heights. In a way he deserves it (to go back on virtually everything he ever said on his early albums that is). Lets face it he’s not getting any younger, and the New New school (lupe, Charles Hamilton, Kid Cudi, etc.) are taking up the task of invigoration the art. I’m just glad he still has a career after Electric Circus…which I will admit is simply not as bad as some people have made it out, actually I think it’s dope, but that’s just me.
Anyway, what better way to celebrate one of my favorite artist than by sharing his songs. This Remix was done by Beatnik and K-Salaam. on a scale of 1-10 I give it a 9, which is 8 higher than UMC…jk!
