The Sounds of VTech / Suite For Ma Dukes: Take Notice

has got to be one of the most unique and inspiring musical creations of late. That a composer like Miguel Atwood-Ferguson was so touched by the legacy of the late Jay Dilla does not surprise me at all. There are advocates of his work across the musical spectrum (from jazz to classical to dub-step) their are so-called ‘heads’ and there are people who love his arrangements through groups like The Roots and ATCQ but who have no idea who he is; however, there is surely NOTHING LIKE THIS (pun intended). I feel somewhat vindicated in my opinion (that with his time on earth James Yancey was the best Hip Hop producer) even though such opinions are trivial and subjective; it’s my opinion and I’m free to have it and defend it for the very simple reason that there is no other musical arrangement that moves like a Dilla beat. Nonetheless the Suite for Ma Dukes is surely evidence of his lasting legacy, which crosses musical borders and sojourns on into the realm of timeless greatness. R.I.P JAMES YANCEY.
